Chapter Twenty-Two

It was early morning by the time we returned home. After some food and sleep (and then more food), we reconvened to discuss our next move. It was decided that my brothers would return to Iowa to start at the beginning and see if anything had been missed—if they could find something that might shed some light on the identity of our unknown mindfucker. The Fates would go out on normal patrol because we still had a job to do outside of solving the mystery of the stolen girls. And Muses, well, he’d do whatever it was Muses did. He never said and I never asked. Some things were best left unknown.

Early evening was upon us sooner than I expected and the others all filed out, leaving Gabe, TS, and me alone in the warehouse. I had the night off for once, which was welcome, but frustrating. I really wanted to figure out what was happening to those girls, but I didn’t want to throw shade on myself by turning down a night away from the club. Then I looked at TS and Gabe eyeing each other from across the room and wondered if the club was a better place to be.

Then I remembered that TS had told me on the way home that he would go alone to look into the tattoo artist. I think he wanted to ascertain whether it was anything worth letting the others in on before we did. The look of apprehension in his eyes when he’d relayed his plan hadn’t gone unnoticed. He was less than excited about keeping my secret. I watched him disappear through the door, hoping he’d figure out a way to spin things if his investigation proved fruitful—which I hoped it did, for the girls’ sake. Even if that meant my ass on a platter. But ten minutes after he left, he texted me, saying he’d received a call from my father. He was needed somewhere immediately—undoubtedly some mess to clean up—so a magical escort had been sent for him, whisking him away in a flash to some unknown destination. He didn’t say how long he would be, but whenever my dad required his services, it usually wasn’t quick.

That left the tattoo investigation on hold. It also left Gabe and me at home to our own devices all night. Perhaps not the best situation, given the mood I was in. I was on edge, prickling with anger and frustration, and I only knew a couple of ways to deal with it. I turned to Gabe with a wild look in my eye and smiled.

He'd changed so much in the short time since we'd fought the Anemoi—since he'd lost his mother. It was so easy for me to forget just how harsh a transition he'd had, if one could call it a transition at all. It was more of a supernatural bitchslap than anything, and those hurt. I knew that from personal experience. In many ways, Gabe and I were not so different.
